 The global scale of the AIDS epidemic is enormous, with nearly 25 million deaths and another 40 million people infected by the end of 2001. African countries and India have been worst affected, but AIDS is on the rise across the world, notably in Eastern Europe and the Caribbean. As well as the human tragedy, the disease also has a profound impact on economic growth and poverty. The central message of this book is that education is a major engine of economic and social development, and the expansion of educational opportunities to all children is one of the most effective means of HIV prevention.
